Ranked across 62 countries for 2027. The interesting number is not how many holidays a country gazettes, but how many actually fall on a working day.

Who actually keeps their holidays

A public holiday that lands on a Saturday or Sunday is not a day off unless the country grants a day in lieu. This is the difference most rankings ignore.

Lose the fewest

Japan 17 holidays 1 lost
Hong Kong 16 holidays 1 lost
Canada 6 holidays 1 lost
Turkey 13 holidays 2 lost
Saudi Arabia 12 holidays 2 lost

Lose the most

Slovenia 15 holidays 9 lost
South Korea 24 holidays 9 lost
Sweden 13 holidays 8 lost
Romania 17 holidays 8 lost
Italy 14 holidays 7 lost

Where the national figure misleads

In federal countries holidays are set regionally, so a single national number understates what most people actually get.

Method

Computed from the open-source python-holidays library (version 0.103) for 2027, across 62 countries chosen for having meaningful search demand — not every country the library covers, which would include places with no permanent population.

Recurring markers are excluded. Some countries encode every Sunday as a holiday in law; counting those would put Sweden at 61 "public holidays" rather than its real figure. Any entry appearing more than 20 times in a year is treated as a weekday marker and dropped. 1 such entries were removed.

"Days actually off" excludes holidays that land on a rest day. Countries differ in whether they grant a day in lieu, which is why the ranking by effective days differs from the ranking by raw count.

Federal countries report national, best and worst region. Switzerland gazettes 4 national holidays but 15 in Ticino; ranking it on the national figure alone would be misleading.

Figures are computed, not hand-collected, and may differ from official sources where a country has changed its calendar recently. Corrections welcome — get in touch.
